Starting July 1, Jakarta began a new chapter in reducing plastic waste when a gubernatorial regulation banning single-use plastic bags in traditional markets, modern supermarkets and mini-markets across Jakarta took effect.
The regulation tries to reduce Jakarta plastic waste consumption which reaches 5.2 tons per day, based on Jakarta Environment Agency and the Indonesian Movement for Plastic Bags Diet data.
Jakarta follows a global initiative begun on July 3, 2017 later commemorated as International Plastic Bag Free Day. Research shows that plastic takes 100-500 years to decompose. While in a minute there are one million plastic bags are used worldwide.
