APP Enters Japan's Keindanren Economic Organization

Jakarta, 14 April 2016 - Asia Pulp & Paper has become the first Indonesian company to be a member of Japan`s economic organization Keidanren.

Keidanren is the most respected association in Japan because of the number of its members and the scale of its businesses. In addition, Keidanren association has the role as facilitator when there is a meeting which involves the Government of Japan and Industrial sectors.

"We support the membership of APP as the first Indonesian company in Keidanren. APP has successfully expanded abroad in a developed country like in Japan," Chairman of APP Japan Tan Ui Sian said.

APP Japan`s membership in Keidanren affirms the company`s position in Japan as being equal to big and top companies in that country. "This clearly gives an opportunity to APP Japan to know and cooperate with other members in Keidanren," he said.

Japan is a country known for its high operational standards where consumers care much about products made through a green process especially the ones from forests or natural resources, Tan admitted.

"APP photocopy paper is now the market leader in Japan with its market share about 25 percent. This reflects Japanese consumers` confidence not only in the quality of the product but also in the commitment of the company to implementing a sustainable forest-based industry," he said.

Besides photocopy paper, APP Japan is also taken into account for other products such as uncoated paper, tissue and toilet papers. Besides, APP is currently developing its market share to packaging board and specialty grade, such as color paper as well as stationary products.

"With APP`s membership in Keidanren it is hoped Indonesia will be able to play a bigger role later to deepen the economic relations between Indonesia and Japan," he said.

APP, through APP Japan, also consistently invites all stakeholders in Japan to care about environment problems and participate in the efforts to deal with climate change through among others by planting trees in various regions in Indonesia along with academicians, researchers, government agencies, and business and association elements, in addition to Japanese NGOs. In August, APP Japan will invite Japanese sport legends to be involved in the activities.

About Asia Pulp & Paper Group
Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) is a trade name for a group of pulp and paper manufacturing companies in Indonesia and China. APP is responsible for delivering quality products to meet the growing global demand for tissue, packaging and paper. On any given day, our products find their way into the hands of consumers in various branded forms all over the world.
Started in 1972 with Tjiwi Kimia producing caustic soda, we now run operations across Indonesia and China with an annual combined pulp, paper, packaging product and converting capacity of over 20 million tons per annum. Today, APP markets its products in more than 120 countries across six continents.
Over the years, we have expanded our operations significantly through the acquisition and expansion of several of our pulp and paper mills. It’s our commitment to customer satisfaction that enables us to grow our share in paper sales worldwide and to broaden our presence through offices in many countries. We believe ‘tradition and modernity go hand in hand’ which means we value long term relationships as part of our Eastern traditions, while also embracing modern values of innovation and efficiency.
Maintaining the integrity of our supply chain is crucial to APP’s operations.  APP launched its Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 in June 2012 and announced its Forest Conservation Policy in February 2013, both designed to further improve APP’s environmental performance, biodiversity conservation, and protection of community rights. Key objectives of the Roadmap are to ensure that APP pulpwood suppliers protect areas of High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS), manage peatlands responsibly, and are 100% Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) certified by 2020.
In April 2014, APP launched its commitment to support the protection and restoration of one million hectares of forest in Indonesia. To date, APP and its suppliers have allocated approximately 600,000 hectares for conservation within its suppliers’ concessions and for ecosystem restoration.
