Gender equality is a fundamental right and an essential facet of sustained economic growth. Acknowledging its importance for a sustainable future, APP is working together with the Martha Tilaar Group and Global Compact Indonesia to empower women in Indonesia. Our Chief Sustainability Officer Elim Sritaba shared the progress we’ve made at the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit last week.
The partnership has helped more than 1,600 women to develop skills in entrepreneurship. The upskilling has helped them become more empowered, improving household income and resulting in more resilient rural communities that thrive even amidst the pandemic.
In line with our commitment to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals of “No Poverty” and “Gender Equality”, this collaboration is done through our Desa Makmur Peduli Api (DMPA) program, which is also known as the Integrated Forestry and Farming System). DMPA, is our sustainability initiative which encourages the community to protect the environment and adopt sustainable forest management.
Investing in women is a part of APP’s sustainability commitment.
“Poverty is a major contributor to environmental degradation. Our DMPA program, which looks to raise both economic resilience and environmental awareness among rural communities, helps alleviate poverty by introducing systems to improve productivity in rural economies and increase household incomes. At the same time, our programs target environmental practices like slash and burn, and make these communities into allies in the fight against dangerous land fires and poaching”. said Elim. “Investing in women is an important part of this strategy, and of APP’s sustainability commitment.”
