Elly Telasari: Spreading The Spirit of Kartini Through Innovation and Sincerity

For more than 20 years, Elly has been contributing to improving people's lives near the concession area through Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas community development program. Two keys that make her keep her motivated are to keep innovating and working with a sincere heart, thus she called by 'Bunda' (mother in English) with their teammate and the locals.

Working as a Social and Community Development (SDC) Head at Musi Banyuasin, Jambi, Elly put her heart in building and improving lives of the local communities. Being a mother of three inspires the way she takes her role as an honor and opportunity to always give more to the people around here.

One of the program supervised by Elly and her team is the honey farm managed by 'Kelompok Tani Sumber Rejeki' in Muara Merang village, South Sumatra. This program launched in 2020 and is part of APP's integrated forestry and farming system, Desa Makmur Peduli Api (DMPA).

"They came with the whole package as the initial idea was from the local themselves, my part was just helping them to get the approval from the management. This program is continuously impactful and improves the welfare of their village," she said.

Bee habitat around acacia trees is a common thing as they eat the nectar from acacia flowers. However, this natural process of bee habitat is relying upon weather conditions which also leads to uncertain harvesting.

"They depend on that kind of natural process which tricky enough for them to have fix income. The objective of this program is to help them tackle the problem by fixing the production cycle as they build the honey farm in our area," she explained.

The production started in 2020 by producing 106 kgs of honey, but, as of February 2021, they could produce up to 800 kgs of honey per harvest. The honey cost IDR 65 thousand (apr. 4-5 USD) per kg and the locals could get gross income up to IDR 52 million (apr. 3.500 USD) per cycle where they were able to have three cycles of harvesting per month. The bottled honey has been sold to several areas around Sumatra.

"The key is to work with a sincere heart. I gained this value through my experience and I want to share this story with the communities. My main goal is to improve the livelihoods of the people, not just gaining benefit for the company," she explained.

The meaning of Kartini

"Kartini Day is a momentum to remind ourselves as women to always stand up and push forward our ideas. Keep creating. Keep innovating. Keep adding values for us and beyond ourselves." said Elly.

Working in the field in her entire career has motivated her to generate new ideas to represent the company to help communities.

"As a woman, we have to keep innovating. Don't be afraid to keep creating to bring goods for others, not just for ourselves," Elly stated.
