Jakarta, 04 August 2022 – Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas announced today it has received top ratings from EcoVadis across its Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) performance, achieving an overall ‘Advanced’ score which places one of the world’s largest integrated pulp and paper manufacturer within the 97th percentile of its industry.
APP was assessed on 4 key areas: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement. It received an ‘Outstanding’ (highest rating level) for Environment, ‘Advanced’ for Ethics and ‘Moderate’ for both Labor & Human Rights and Sustainable Procurement.
Speaking on its latest sustainability accolade, APP’s Chief Sustainability Officer Elim Sritaba said, “The EcoVadis rating validates the hard work and commitment put in by everyone at APP, from our leaders who support the company’s ESG focus, to our staff, customers, suppliers and community stakeholders who work with us to adhere to our policies and actions. Even as we celebrate this achievement, we must acknowledge there are areas for improvement and APP will step up our efforts to address them accordingly.”
For each of the four categories, companies are assessed according to the strengths of their policies, actions and results, as well advised on areas of improvement and the level of priority (High, Medium, Low) that should be assigned to these areas.
Under the Environment category, APP was assessed to have strong policies and quantitative objectives in areas such as biodiversity, energy and water consumption, and GHG emissions. Equally important, APP was also recognized for its use of alternative fuels such as biomass to improve energy efficiency and/or lower carbon emission intensity. The assessment found the company to have conducted independent environmental audits, and with a majority of its facilities being ISO14001 certified.
APP was also recognised as having quantitative objectives set on diversity, equity & inclusion, and supporting documentation demonstrated a high level of coverage of labor and human rights actions throughout the company operations and workforce, including comprehensive reporting on labor and human rights issues. Importantly, EcoVadis found that APP was comprehensive on its reporting of environmental issues and that its reporting was done in accordance to GRI standards.
Added Ms Sritaba, “As a responsible and sustainable business, and one that is dependent on people, nature and supply chains functioning in harmony, we strive to perform consistently well on key aspects of our operations such as protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions, supporting and protecting the rights of our staff and the communities we operate in, and ensuring clear and transparent corporate policies so that collectively, we can achieve the SDGs as well as corporate, national and global climate targets.”
Founded in 2007, EcoVadis has grown to become the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, with a global network of more than 90,000 rated companies. Its assessment methodology is based on international sustainability standards including the Global Reporting Initiative, United Nations Global Compact, and ISO 26000, and is supervised by a scientific committee of sustainability and supply chain experts, to ensure reliable third-party sustainability assessments.
The high rating from EcoVadis follows APP’s recent recognition as the Most Sustainable Company in the pulp & paper industry at the World Finance Sustainability Awards by World Finance Magazine and its top rating by UK-based not-for-profit organization CDP in Dec 2021 when it was given an A- for the forestry category, surpassing that of the industry for its overall environmental performance.
