Asia Pulp & Paper’s Foopak Bio Natura Proves to Fully Biodegrade at Home

Jakarta, August 11, 2020, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) is pleased to announce the receipt of the TUV OK Compost Home S1345 certification for its comprehensive range of its Foopak Bio Natura packaging board.  The TUV certification confirms Foopak Bio Natura products can fully biodegrade in backyard home compost or garden within 24 weeks.

The newly added certification compliments existing ISEGA EN13432 certification for industrial composting and the Institute cyclos-HTP EN13430 certification for recyclability, enhancing the end-of-life options for sustainable food packaging via home composting, recycling or industrial composting capabilities, creating an ideal circular economy packaging to support a greener & more sustainable earth.

APP’s award-winning Foopak Bio Natura plastic-free paperboard is ideal for hot and cold takeaway food service, beverage, and ready-to-eat food packaging.  Both recyclable and compostable, APP has replaced the traditional petroleum-based plastic coating with innovative and revolutionary aqua-dispersion technology, making the product fully sustainable and plastic-free.  APP’s Foopak Bio Natura also conforms to the US FDA standards and REACH requirements for direct food contact.

“While social distancing has had some positive impact to our world - cleaner air, bluer skies and reduced carbon emissions, the increasing Covid-driven waste has unforeseen negative environmental impact driven by higher usage of PPE which are necessary for better public health and an increasing use of takeaways in single-use plastic container format, posed a serious problem to the global plastic waste issue” said Felix Koh, SVP & Head, Business Unit Industrial, Asia Pulp & Paper. “Our Bio Natura Foopak line is designed to address some of these plastic waste concerns.  We are now able to provide restaurants & food service industry with plastic-free; sustainable, recyclable and compostable packaging solutions to reduce and eliminate landfill waste and ocean pollution.”

The testing conducted by TUV Austria was based on a detailed analysis of the biodegradation of the papers Organic Waste Systems’ (OWS) and included an analysis of heavy metals, anaerobic degradation, compostability, and measurement of ecotoxicity to the products afterlife.  The results confirmed that APP’s Bio Natura food packaging can break down to CO2, water, and biomass naturally, compared to traditional PE coated food packaging that has a decomposition rate of hundreds of years.

The basis for TUV certification is defined by the American Society for Testing & Measurement, (ASTM) and is recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
