“Paperun 2017″ Strives to Improve Literacy in Indonesia

Jakarta, November 23, 2017 – Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) and Kompas daily worked together to stage Paperun 2017, a 5-kilometer charity fun run. The event was aimed at promoting reading and writing habits in Indonesia. APP, through its paper brand SIDU, held the “Ayo Menulis” (“Let’s Write”) campaign during the run to highlight its concern at the lack of interest in literacy in Indonesia. All revenue from ticket sales in Paperun 2017 was donated to campaigns to improve national literacy levels.

Paperun offered many challenges for participants. Along the 5-kilometer route, runners found surprises such as fun and challenging obstacles. Apart from the main prize, runners also had the chance to win door prizes including an iPhone, a camera, a drone, a bicycle and other prizes. After the finish line, runners were entertained with musical performances from Jevin Julian and The Changcuters. There were also many attractive contests such as an Instagram Photo Contest and a Best Costume award at the end of the event.

Through the event, APP and Kompas daily encouraged runners to donate their favorite books to be distributed to regions in need. Kompas event general manager Lukminto Wibowo said, “Reading is important not only for ourselves but also for the nation. Such a good habit needs to be encouraged. However, the lack of references sometimes leads to people being reluctant to read books.” Sinar Mas managing director Saleh Husin added, “We hope that the event will serve as an opportunity to improve people’s reading and writing habits, especially in regions with low literacy rates.”
