Paper is so integral to our lives that we often take it for granted, forgetting its vital role in education, work, and daily transactions. Yet, behind every sheet of paper is a carefully managed process that begins in tree nurseries. These “tree factories” are the foundation of the paper industry, cultivating the trees that supply the pulp essential for paper production.
In Perawang, Riau, close to the city of Pekanbaru, APP operates a nursery that plays a key role in its sustainable forestry efforts. This facility is where the life cycle of acacia crassicarpa and eucalyptus pellita trees begins, supporting pulp and paper production across Indonesia while prioritizing sustainability.
The process starts with the mother tree, carefully selected for its superior genetic traits such as resilience and fast growth. Tissue cultures are developed from this tree in sterile laboratory conditions. These cultures undergo a multiplication process lasting 25 to 30 days, during which they are closely monitored for healthy growth. This is followed by a 15-day rooting process, during which the young plants develop their first roots and shoots, becoming strong enough to transition to the next stage.
When the seedlings are deemed ready, they are moved outdoors to grow under more natural conditions. This phase involves careful management to ensure the saplings adapt well. The young plants are arranged in rows and receive regular care, including watering, controlled-release fertilizers, and protective pesticides. A boom sprayer is used to efficiently dispense water, fertilizer, and pesticide, ensuring even coverage and promoting uniform growth.
The outdoor environment helps the saplings acclimate to the conditions they will face in production forests. Regular monitoring ensures that any issues are addressed promptly, and the saplings continue to develop into healthy, resilient trees. Once they reach the desired level of maturity, they are transported to APP’s operational areas across Indonesia and planted in production forests.
This nursery-to-forest process enables APP to meet demand while protecting natural forests. By employing advanced tissue culture techniques, efficient outdoor management, and a well-planned harvest cycle, APP demonstrates its commitment to balancing production needs with environmental care.
