Prioritising the Health and Safety of Our Employees at APP Sinar Mas

Whether our employees are in the mills, working from a desk, or out in the field, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas is committed to prioritising the well-being of each and every one of our employees. This is done through various health and safety policies and practices best suited for each individual mill.

Our people and surrounding communities are key to delivering a positive impact on our sustainability goals within our Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2030. In turn, we implement various programmes and policies to place health and safety as a top priority throughout our operations.

As one of the policies in place to explain our commitment to human rights, our Employee Welfare Policy far exceeds International Labour Organisation (ILO) requirements when it comes to employee safety, well-being, human rights, labour rights, skills, and data.

To prevent workplace accidents, APP screens third-party contractors in accordance with the Contractor Safety Management System (CSMS) to ensure that all third parties with whom we work are qualified for the risk at hand. These screening programs are designed to ensure that we accept only vendors who are qualified and certified to work in the factory.

As of 2021, all our mills are SMK3 certified, which is the Indonesian national standard for health and safety in the workplace. We even have an OHSMS Manual which is a guide to developing, implementing, and maintaining OHSMS for all operations and facilities.

Annually, APP conducts an internal OHSMS Performance Audit to examine our strategy, leadership, planning, the level of available support, and operational and performance aspects to best concentrate our efforts on the most critical areas, such as process safety management systems, emergency response, regulatory compliance, and more.

To demonstrate our commitment to our employees, APP implemented the Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) Prevention Program which is highly customised for each mill to prevent serious injury or death.

Representing the entire workforce, we also established a Joint Safety Committee as a way for employees to communicate safety concerns for APP to consult and improve on.

APP’s safety management process emphasises people, operational processes and assets as part of a loss prevention strategy with three stages - implementation, emergency management, and monthly safety meetings.

Additionally, employees are provided with risk management training which includes 8 Safety Golden Rules for improving the health, safety and environmental performance for building a proactive safety culture. The #1 Safety Golden Rule deals with personal responsibility for safety, where employees will immediately cease work and seek assistance if they suspect that a situation is unsafe.

We also utilise a calculated and systematic risk management procedure for identifying hazards, risks and incidents, which includes Basic Principles Risk Assessment, Hazard Identification, Assessment of OHS Risk and Other Risk: Inherent OHS Risk, Existing OHS Risk, Residual Risk, Assessment of OHS and Other Opportunities, Action Planning, Risk Management Program Review and Analysis, and Job Safety Analysis. Using risk assessment tools such as the Hazard Report and Job Safety Analysis, we can identify risks for our Risk Reduction Plan.

As part of our efforts to prevent potential accidents, we conduct periodic inspections and risk assessments. We have also developed a Stop Work Authority (SWA) Program where employees can stop work if they identify unsafe behaviour or conditions.

Through stringent health and safety policies such as these, we have managed to decrease the injury rate for our male and female employees as of 2021, and we will continue to stay committed to protecting the health and safety of all our employees throughout their workday.
