One of the most serious impacts of COVID-19 is food security. It is feared that the continuing lockdowns affecting labour and availability for agricultural operations, coupled with the stoppage of transport networks, will seriously disrupt food supplies. But that doesn't happen to Marga Jaya village in Pakulonan, North Serpong, South Tangerang. The village succeeds in catfish farms and hydroponic plants and received the Kampung Jawara 2020 title on July 9, 2020. This village is part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program from PT Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper (IKPP) Tangerang Mill Tbk.
The title itself was given by Indonesian Police along with the local government to the villages who were able to prevent COVID-19 in their areas. Marga Jaya food security is a success story in the middle of the pandemic. Jawara is a nickname associated with a healthy, safe, religious and prosperous village.
"We are proud to be able to help the community," said IKPP Tangerang Head of Sustainability, Kholisul Fatikhin.
The catfish farms assistance began in 2016, and now they are able to harvest up to three times a year. In the midst of a pandemic, the group could earn around US$ 200 per month which was supplied to traditional markets and fishing facilities.
Implemented last year, Kampung Marga Jaya are now able to provide vegetables for their own household with spinach, water spinach, and others. Community leaders Haidir said the training given to them was a breakthrough, it was really helpful to the Marga Jaya people.
