In Supporting Climate Change Mitigation, APP Sinar Mas with Business Partners Plant Trees Using Biodegradable Containers

Jakarta, 30 November 2022 - In supporting the government to mitigate climate change, as well as campaigning for reducing plastic waste, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas collaborated with the Ministry of Environment & Forestry (KLHK), Bisnis Indonesia Group, and APP Sinar Mas' business partners who is engaged in the converting industry, to hold an activity to plant 1,000 tree seeds using Foopak Bio Natura planting containers that are environmentally friendly. This activity is also part of the 2022 Indonesian Tree Planting Day (HMPI) which fell on November 28, 2022.

The planting activity which was carried out at the Nagrak Cilincing Flat, North Jakarta, used non-plastic planting containers as part of the product innovations from APP Sinar Mas, Foopak Bio Natura. By utilizing Foopak Bio Natura, these containers are not only biodegradable (soluble in the soil within a maximum of 12 weeks) but can also function as compost.

Deputy Director of Corporate Strategy & Relations APP Sinar Mas Iwan Setiawan in his remarks said that this tree planting activity supports the Government's efforts to mitigate climate change as well as campaigning for the reduction of plastic waste in society, as well as business owners.

"Utilizing Foopak Bio Natura as a planting medium is our effort in campaigning for paper-based products that are biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, and plastic-free. So that it can be a solution to the global problem due to plastic waste," said Iwan.

Sayid Muhadhar, Secretary of the Director General of Garbage, Waste and B3 Management at the KLHK, appreciated the efforts made by APP Sinar Mas through the Foopak Bio Natura product. According to him, this product is extraordinary because it easily decomposes in a relatively short time. Sayid also said that currently the government is encouraging waste to be easily recycled and decomposed again, just like the campaign that Foopak is carrying out through this tree planting activity.

Meanwhile, the Director of Forest Rehabilitation of KLHK Nikolas Nugroho in his remarks said, "The President has told us how we take a role in terms of absorbing carbon emissions. One of the important points of carbon absorption is planting trees, because in the process of growing trees, a large amount of carbon will be absorbed," he said.

Nikolas also appreciated the tree planting activity that was carried out today. According to him, small efforts on a local scale like this, if carried out massively, of course, the impact would be extraordinary.

From APP Sinar Mas' business partner, Director of PT Glopac Indonesia Dillon Sutandar said, in the future the demand for these environmentally friendly products will increase along with public awareness of the importance of reducing the use of plastic, especially for the use of food & beverage packaging. So that it can indirectly contribute to protecting the environment.

“Many entrepreneurs are starting to be interested in packaging that is safe and environmentally friendly. In the future, this business will be promising along with education about packaging that is safe for food and environmentally friendly," said Dillon.

In addition, to support addressing the impacts of climate change, APP Sinar Mas is working with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) to build the Sriwijaya Kemampo Nursery Center, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province with a capacity of 10 million seeds per year which will be realized in 2023.

"This step is also private support for the government's program to fulfill Indonesia's FoLU Net Sink 2030. It is hoped that it will not only achieve the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions but can also be used as a momentum to accelerate the process of improving quality and strengthening environmental and forestry governance in Indonesia," explained Iwan.
