The Vision Behind DMPA
Founded by APP, the DMPA or Desa Makmur Peduli Alam program aims to provide sustainable livelihoods while protecting forests and preventing land fires. The program is based on the idea of an integrated forestry and farming system. By mapping local community villages located near forest borders, DMPA helps identify no-burn livelihood alternatives, allowing local populations to thrive without resorting to harmful practices. Since its inception, the program has expanded to cover 441 villages, benefiting over 87,500 people—a testament to its potential for transformative change. In alignment with the principles of sustainability, APP Group has made significant progress through its DMPA program. Launched in 2015, DMPA represents a comprehensive approach to environmental protection and community empowerment, serving as a model for greener living.
One of the standout achievements of the DMPA program is its impressive 90% reduction in forest fires within participating villages, as reported in the 2023 Sustainability Roadmap Vision Report. By integrating economic, environmental, and social strategies, DMPA not only protects forests but also raises awareness of the risks associated with land fires. Through community education and engagement, the program fosters a culture of preparedness and resilience, empowering local populations to take proactive steps in environmental stewardship.
Infrastructure development is a cornerstone of the DMPA initiative, laying the groundwork for sustainable communities. By constructing essential facilities and promoting eco-friendly farming practices, DMPA strengthens local economies while reducing reliance on destructive practices. DMPA also focuses on enhancing livelihoods through various initiatives that promote sustainability. In Suka Maju Village, Tenggarong Seberang District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan the Bank Sampah Mandiri, or Independent Waste Bank, processes plastic waste into paving blocks, generating around IDR 22 million each month. This effort not only reduces environmental pollution but also creates sustainable income sources for community members.
In Benteng Hilir Village, Mempura District, Siak Regency, Riau Province, the program supports honey bee farmers by enhancing their skills, allowing them to earn additional monthly incomes between IDR 3 million and IDR 10 million. DMPA provides training in modern beekeeping practices, fostering economic growth while maintaining ecological balance.
In Rikong Village, East Kalimantan, local artisans receive training to improve their rattan weaving techniques and marketing skills. This initiative not only helps preserve local culture but also opens new avenues for income generation, with the potential for expansion into export markets.
Success Stories from DMPA Communities
The creation of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) has invigorated local economies and bolstered educational and infrastructure initiatives. In Delima Village, Jambi Province, a composting project generates outputs valued at around IDR 3.3 billion annually, making a substantial contribution to the community’s economy. Another noteworthy example is Mariana’s Liberina Dodol Kopi, a coffee-based snack business located in Pematang Lumut Village, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province. As part of the APP - Doktor Sjahrir Foundation Business Incubation program, Mariana successfully expanded her market reach, boosting her income from IDR 1 million to an average of IDR 4.5 million per month. This remarkable growth highlights how sustainable business practices can enhance livelihoods and promote economic resilience.
The DMPA program demonstrates how innovative sustainability practices can foster resilient communities while protecting the environment. On World Sustainability Day, we are reminded of the importance of collective action in promoting sustainable practices. DMPA serves as a valuable example for Indonesia and beyond, highlighting the potential for collaborative efforts to create greener, more sustainable communities. By working together, we can make a meaningful impact and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
