APP Sinar Mas Supports Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Program on Conservation Area Protection and Biodiversity Conservation

Jakarta, December 7, 2022 - In order to protect forest security and biodiversity conservation, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas together with the Directorate General of KSDAE at the Manggala Bakti Building signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding Cooperation in Strengthening the Function of Conservation of Living Natural Resources and Ecosystems in a sustainable manner in the work areas of 5 Technical Implementation Units (UPT) within the scope of the Directorate of KSDAE on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. 

The purpose of this memorandum of understanding is to synergize joint programs in the context of implementing optimal conservation of biological natural resources and ecosystems, in the form of support for rescue activities, rehabilitation of protected animals, protection, area restoration, facilitation and technical assistance for research, monitoring, surveys, education, community awareness, community economic improvement, partnership building, and sustainable funding for conservation.

The follow-up to this Memorandum of Understanding is the cooperation to strengthen the function of conservation of living natural resources and ecosystems sustainably in the work area of the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center, Jambi Natural Resources Conservation Center, South Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center, East Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Center and Berbak Sembilang National Park Center for a period of 3 (three) years. 

This cooperation is in the form of programs aimed at protecting and securing the area as well as protecting key species (Sumatran Tiger and Sumatran Elephant) and other wildlife and their habitats, strengthening the function of the area through support for protection, supervision and conservation of biodiversity around APP Sinar Mas supplier partner areas as a form of Corporate Biodiversity Responsibility.

Acting Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation of KLHK, Bambang Hendroyono stated "One of the strengths of the Directorate General of KSDAE is through cooperation in strengthening the function of conservation areas and conserving biodiversity.  Cooperation to strengthen the function of conservation areas must run in accordance with the principles of mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual benefit. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is the main person in charge of policies and programs for the conservation of natural resources and ecosystems."

Bambang added, "Conservation Areas are the stronghold of protecting Indonesia's biodiversity, and therefore the main choice of conservation area management must be site-based, zoning/block, ecosystem and landscape.  This cooperation is expected to run well, and can have a positive impact on all parties so that conservation areas and biodiversity that are the responsibility of each UPT can be maintained and their functions, and well maintained."

APP Sinar Mas Chief Sustainability Officer, Elim Sritaba said "APP Sinar Mas together with all business units and supply partners, is committed to maintaining the protection of forest security and biodiversity, which is found in the concession areas of the Company and supply partners, in line with APP Sinar Mas' Sustainable Roadmap Vision (SRV) 2030, in order to take an active role in being part of the achievement of the 2030 FOLU Net Sink target to support the Government, in this case the Ministry of Environment and Forestry."
