Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas’ commitment to implementing a sustainable business practice has led the company to win four awards at the Indonesia Green Awards (IGA) 2019.
This year, APP Sinar Mas received an award in the Plastic Waste Handling category, and 2 awards in the Integrated Waste Management category. APP Sinar Mas was also honored with The Best Indonesia Green Awards Program in the Developing Biodiversity category.
“APP Sinar Mas has always been committed and strives to bring a positive impact to the environment and to the community, as stated in the Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020. The success of APP Sinar Mas’ various initiatives is certainly closely linked with the role and participation of the people and the communities living in the vicinity of our operational areas,” said APP Sinar Mas Director Suhendra Wiriadinata.
APP Sinar Mas manifests its commitment through several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs in its operational areas. A few programs teach communities to make full use of factory and plastic waste by developing products from the waste.
APP Sinar Mas, through one of its CSR programs, upcycles plastic strappings, used to tie pulp and paper products, into various woven products. This program, which has improved the quality of life of the women in Perawang, is a CSR program of PT Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk (IKPP) – Perawang Mill, an APP Sinar Mas industrial unit, and won an award in the Plastic Waste Management category.
The second award given to the Integrated Waste Management category of Cipta Handicraft Innovation Product (CHIP), a community mentored by IKPP – Serang Mill. Members of the CHIP community convert wooden crates into high-value art objects, which are widely marketed through social media. The program is also supported by the local government.
While the third award goes to waste bank program developed by PT Pindo Deli Pulp & Paper Mills – Karawang, an APP Sinar Mas industrial unit, as the result of a collaboration with the Sahabat Lingkungan Community Self-Help Unit, the Karawang District Environmental Management Agency and the Cipta Karya Agency, with the support of Jaringan Wirausaha Sampah. This program has successfully helped local communities apply the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in the management of household and liquid waste. This CSR is also form of Pindo Deli Karawang’s support for the revitalization of the Citarum River.
APP Sinar Mas also received a special honor during the awards ceremony for The Best Indonesia Green Awards Program in the Developing Biodiversity category. This special award recognized the company’s strategy in mitigating human-wildlife conflicts in the Industrial Plantation Forest (HTI) concession areas in Sumatra.
This is the second time that APP Sinar Mas has received an award from the Indonesia Green Awards. In 2017, APP Sinar Mas also won similar awards for the Developing Biodiversity and Developing Integrated Waste Management categories.
La Tofi, Chairman of the Indonesia Green Awards assessment team, had expressed deep appreciation for the human-wildlife conflict mitigation program which concerns communities located in the vicinity of the concession areas of APP Sinar Mas suppliers in Sumatra. Correspondingly, the IGA 2019 assessment team presented APP Sinar Mas with the award for the best program. This is a concrete result of the company’s CSR efforts in supporting biodiversity.
The Indonesia Green Awards assessment team consisted of representatives from La Tofi School of CSR, the Industrial Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, and academics from University of Indonesia.
