Azerbaijan, November 16, 2024 – APP Group reaffirms its commitment to supporting the government's efforts in coastal conservation through sustainable mangrove management programs, in line with Indonesia's national vision of preserving coastal ecosystems and mitigating climate change. At the international COP 29 forum in Azerbaijan, APP Group reinforced its mangrove conservation and restoration initiatives as part of cross-sectoral collaboration with the government, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. A total of 550,000 mangrove trees have been restored and planted between 2010 and 2023, with positive impacts covering over 19,000 hectares of coastal areas in Indonesia. This presentation was delivered by Jasmine Natalia Prihartini Doloksaribu, Head of Landscape Conservation and Environment at APP Group.
Mangroves play a vital role in Indonesia's coastal ecosystem, with their unique ability to absorb large amounts of carbon, protect coastlines from erosion, and serve as habitats for rich biodiversity. APP Group understands that preserving and restoring mangroves significantly contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supports global targets in combating climate change. Additionally, healthy mangrove ecosystems protect coastal areas from natural disasters such as tsunamis and storm surges, which frequently affect Indonesia. "As part of the company's sustainability initiatives, mangrove conservation is not only an important strategy in fulfilling APP's environmental responsibilities but also plays a role in maintaining broader ecosystem balance, while strengthening relationships with local communities and stakeholders in sustainability efforts," said Jasmine.
"Indonesia's commitment to mangrove rehabilitation is reflected through active involvement in international forums such as the G20, COP26, and the Water World Forum in Bali, as well as through efforts to restore 180,000 hectares of mangroves in North Kalimantan," said Satyawan Pudyatmoko, Director-General of the Natural Resources Conservation and Ecosystem (KSDAE) Agency, during his keynote speech.
Through collaboration with the government, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and local communities, APP Group strives to build a comprehensive management strategy that includes environmental, social, and economic aspects. This collaborative approach ensures that each phase of the program – from planning to restoration implementation in degraded areas – runs effectively and has a positive impact on the environment and surrounding communities.
In its efforts to empower communities, APP Group also creates sustainable economic opportunities, such as eco-tourism development, mangrove-based products, and ecosystem monitoring activities directly managed by the community. This initiative strengthens the community's role in preserving mangrove ecosystems while enhancing their welfare and livelihoods.
APP Group's support at COP 29 reflects the company's tangible contribution to the global agenda of addressing the climate crisis and restoring ecosystems. With its sustainable mangrove management approach, APP Group affirms its position as a company that cares about environmental conservation while supporting the welfare of local communities through sustainable ecosystem conservation and utilization.
