Supporting Indonesia's NDC Achievement, APP Sinar Mas Commits to Reduce Emissions from Energy and FOLU Sectors by 2030

Yogyakarta, March 3, 2023 - Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas actively participated in the Indogreen Forestry & Environment Expo 2023 initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

In this exhibition, which was held at the Jogja Expo Centre (JEC) from March 2 to 5, 2023, APP Sinar Mas participated in sharing the achievements of efforts to realize healthy and environmentally friendly industrial management in a talk show with the theme "The Importance of Energy Transformation in the Concept of Carbon Sequestration and Climate Change".

APP Sinar Mas Deputy Director, Irsyal Yasman in the talk show explained APP Sinar Mas' commitment to contribute in reducing carbon emissions.

"The Pulp and Paper Industry can contribute to the achievement of NDC targets through the energy, waste and FOLU sectors. Guided by the Sustainability Roadmap Vision (SRV 2030), APP Sinar Mas strives to achieve a 30% reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, from the 2018 baseline. This target has already been realized by achieving a 13% reduction in carbon intensity in 2021," said Irsyal.

Irsyal also added, "In the energy sector, APP Sinar Mas has used renewable energy by 56%, including through the use of black liquor and WWTP sludge waste to reduce the use of coal in the power plants that we use."

On the same occasion, INSTIPER Yogyakarta Rector Harsawardana gave a presentation on ways to manage carbon emissions, one of which is using the Floating Drum Plants technique.

Floating drum plants consist of a digester and a movable gas container. This gas container will move up when the gas increases and down again when the gas decreases, along with the use and production of gas. This technique will produce biogas that can be utilized as alternative energy for people's daily lives.

Biogas itself can be utilized by the community as an alternative energy to replace LPG for cooking and generator fuel to produce electricity. In its development, biogas is considered safer for the earth because burning biogas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, Director General of Sustainable Forest Management of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Agus Justianto at a workshop on the same day themed "Managing the Young Generation to Love Forests and the Environment, in the Era of Information Openness" conveyed the importance of sustainable forest management in controlling climate change, because forests have the potential to absorb huge carbon emissions.

"Indonesia has launched an ENDC (Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution) greenhouse gas emission reduction of 31.89 percent with its own efforts or 43.20 percent with international support, this is a contribution to climate change control (2/3)," Agus said.

To note, the issue of reducing forest and land-based carbon emissions is actualized by the Government in Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 program, which is a condition that wants to be achieved through the absorption rate of carbon emissions.
