Sustainable sips are brewing with possibilities through plastic-free lids

Consumers who have a gripe about how traditional plastic lids in the market currently do not complement sustainable plastic-free cups can now drink their beverages from a fully eco-friendly cup.

During the Natural Products Expo West (NPEW) held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California earlier in the month, APP Group’s exclusive sales channel, Charta Global, launched APP’s first plastic-free cup lids. At the exhibition, which was attended by over 70,000 industry professionals, retailers, and consumers, APP also displayed the full suite of sustainable packaging solutions by its flagship innovation brand, Foopak Bio Natura.

According to a report by McKinsey, there has been a noticeable shift towards a preference for sustainable packaging options amongst consumers, as more consumers have expressed that they are willing to pay more for a product with sustainable packaging. Additionally, a report by Future Market Insights showed that the disposable lids market is estimated to reach US$ 5 billion by 2033.

Although the plastic-free legislation driven in the United States has set new requirements, waste from plastic cup lids is still a huge problem. In order to supply the mass global demand for convenient take-out beverages, many businesses are continuing to use traditional plastic lids. This could be because sustainable lids can be challenging to produce in a way that meets the specific requirements of each brand, such as the need for multiple sizes, lids for lipped cups, or even tight-fitting lids.

In the fight against plastic waste generated by single-use plastic cup lids, APP now offers plastic-free, recyclable cup lids that are designed to meet composting standards. These PFAS-free lids, which are created with Foopak Bio Natura’s proprietary aqueous dispersion coating technology, can be used with Foopak Bio Natura’s existing plastic-free cups, as well as with a wide range of other cups, to provide a fully sustainable cup solution and address consumer demands for sustainable packaging options.

To allow businesses to fully customize their branding, these lids are available in a flat-top design which is leak-resistant, suitable for both hot and cold beverages, and allows for a hole to be made for using preferably recyclable or reusable straws.

While sustainability is an important value proposition for brands today, it is equally, if not more important for brands like APP to be able to provide their customers with top-quality products. That is why these sustainable lids are made to deliver the capabilities of traditional packaging without the plastic waste.

During the nearly week-long event, APP and Charta Global also had the opportunity to meet with like-minded businesses and consumers who were also interested in advancing sustainability in the food and beverage packaging sector through real solutions. Booth visitors said they were impressed  at the diverse product range which include sustainable cups, lids, bowls, trays and other food packaging solution from a single vendor.

These plastic-free lids are not just a welcome expansion to Foopak Bio Natura’s suite of sustainable packaging, but also an effort by APP to provide packaging solutions that contribute to the fight against plastic waste. Through initiatives like this, it is clear that sustainability is no longer a perk in products, but the new normal.
