Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas receives top EcoVadis ratings for the second year in a row

Jakarta, 04 August 2023 – Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas is pleased to announce that, for the second year running, it has received top ratings from EcoVadis, the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings.

APP was given an overall score of 74/100, which places the company within the 97th percentile of pulp, paper and paperboard manufacturers globally.

EcoVadis assesses companies in 4 key areas, Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement, in which Environment and Labor & Human Rights carry the heaviest score weightage.

Based on their scoring, this assessment has reinforced APP’s position as one of the leading companies in their industry.

Letchumi Achanah, APP’s Head of Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy, said: “The EcoVadis assessment shows a continuous commitment towards sustainable development.  The fact that we consecutively received top-ranks demonstrates that we are delivering upon our promise to continue our ESG journey, which is aligned to APP’s Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2030.”

Part of how APP managed to continue to sustain the high score is their commitment to a deforestation-free supply chain through their policies such as the Supplier Risk Evaluation Assessment and Fibre Processing Procurement Policy, as well as the expansion of their fire-free village programme, Desa Makmur Peduli Api (DMPA) and various forest restoration and conservation efforts.

However, the company isn’t resting on their laurels. Ian added: “Instead of just celebrating our achievements, EcoVadis also highlights areas of improvement that we need to work on. This was more important to us than highlighting areas where we did well and we will look at how else we can improve on all four key areas, regardless of the scores we received in each one. In addition, the next steps that we will also look at is how to create more forests by helping partners and suppliers who want to commit to better forest management practices implement policies that help them on their sustainability journey.”

Founded in 2007, EcoVadis has grown to become the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, with a global network of more than 100,000 rated companies. The EcoVadis sustainability assessment methodology evaluates how well a company has integrated the principles of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility into their business and management system based on seven founding principles and international sustainability standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact, and the ISO 26000.
